The Green House: Filling the Gap in Grief Support

susanshaw784

There are many incredible programs available to support grieving families, and my family has personally benefited from many of them. For example, we still attend a wonderful grief support group in our area called Jeff’s Place in Framingham, MA. Jeff’s Place offers free services to children who have lost a sibling or parent, and caregivers are invited to participate in the support groups as well. It’s an amazing resource for families, providing a safe space for healing and connection.

Another remarkable support system for grieving families is experience-based programs like sleepaway camps. Last summer, my son Kai attended Experience Camp, a free weeklong camp for children who have lost a sibling or parent. This camp brings kids together who share the common bond of loss, focusing on building resilience and fostering connections among peers who understand their grief. It’s an incredibly supportive and healing experience.

There are also grief retreats available for specific groups—such as moms, dads, or couples—offering spaces for shared healing and reflection. These programs are wonderful in their own right, providing tailored support for particular needs in the grieving process.

However, The Green House initiative is different. While these programs are all valuable and important, The Green House fills a crucial gap in grief support that focuses specifically on the immediate family unit. Our mission is to serve one family at a time, offering them a dedicated space to heal together. We understand that after a tragic death, the surviving family members—whether parents, siblings, or caregivers—are often left to navigate grief while trying to preserve the bond that once existed in their family.

The Green House will provide families with an opportunity to escape the heaviness of their daily environment and focus on each other’s healing. It’s designed to foster connection, reflection, and rest, allowing families to process their grief in their own way, at their own pace. The house will be curated to enhance the healing process, with every detail carefully chosen to provide comfort and promote moments of peace. This will be a place for growth after loss, where families can create new memories, find solace, and build strength together.

The key difference is that The Green House is about offering a private, intimate space for families to heal as a unit, outside of the collective grief programs that serve larger groups. It’s an opportunity for families to reconnect and focus on what they need after such a profound loss—together, away from the weight of everyday life.

WBYC is proud to offer this unique form of support for grieving families, and we hope that The Green House will provide comfort, peace, and an invaluable space for healing during the most difficult times.
